Operating System Defination
An operating system is a software that works as an interface between a user and the computer hardware. The operating system performs a various tasks like receiving input from the keyboard, processing instructions, and sending output to the screen.
An operating system is a software that is required to run application programs and utilities. It provides better interaction between application programs and the hardware of the computer. The operating system is the first software you see when you turn on the computer, and the last software you see when the computer is turned off.
An important point about the operating system
1. Operating system manages overall activities of a computer and the input/output devices attached to the computer.
2. Operating System manages the hardware and software resources of the computer system and these resources include the processor, memory, disk space, etc.
3. The operating system provides a stable way for applications to deal with the hardware without having to know all the details of the hardware.
4. When you turn on the computer, the operating system program is loaded into the main memory. This program is called the kernel. The kernel is the lowest layer of an operating system that provides the core capabilities of the system and allows processes to access the hardware in an orderly manner.
5. The operating system hides the hardware level activities and functionalities from the user and presents a simpler view to the user in the form of an interface.

In this regard, the operating system acts as a manager to allocate the available resources to satisfy the requirements of each process.
Consistent application interface
The another task providing a consistent application interface is especially important. A consistent application program interface allows a user to write an application program on any computer and to run this program on another computer, even if the hardware configuration is different like as type of CPU, amount of memory or storage disk.
