Do you know about the Generations of computer

This blog related to generations of computer. Generation of computer is provide the knowledge of development of the technology in the field of computers. It was used to distinguish between various hardware and software technologies in the development of the computer is due to technological advancement; different changes have come in the computer system.

Generations of computer

The generations of computers are divided into five types:-

  1. First Generation
  2. Second Generation
  3. Third Generation
  4. Fourth Generation
  5. Fifth Generation

Characteristics of generations of computer

The following segment discusses the main characteristics of each generation one by one.

First Generation(1942-1955)

  • Which is used Vacuum tube technology.
  • First generation computers are Unreliable.
  • They have supported machine language only not another language.
  • First-generation computers are Very costly.
  • They are generated a lot of heat.
  • The input is based on punched cards and paper tape.
  • Limited programming capabilities.
  • They were unreliable as they could produce inaccurate results sometimes.
  • The speed of input and output devices is very slow.
  • First-generation computers size is very huge
  • Need for AC
  • First-generation computers non-portable

Second Generation(1955-1964)

  • This generation of computers used Transistors in place of vacuum tubes.
  • They are Reliable in comparison to first-generation computers.
  • They are smaller in size compare to the first generation computer.
  • They are generated less heat .
  • These computers consume less electricity as compared to first generation computers.
  • They are 10 times faster than the first generation of computers.
  • The cost of computers is very high.
  • They are using machine and assembly languages.

Third generation(1964-1975)

  • Integrated circuitswere used instead of vacuum tubes and transistors.
  • They are more reliable in comparison to the previous two generations .
  • The size is smaller.
  • They are generated with less heat .
  • They perform all task very fast mode.
  • They have to need lesser maintenance.
  • The third generation computer is very Costly.
  • Third generation computer AC required.
  • They are consumed lesser electricity.
  • Third generation computer supported high-level language.

Fourth generations(1975-1989)

  • In this high-speed Microprocessors were used.
  • Millions of electronic components were integrated into a single microprocessor chip.
  • They are using VLSI technology used.
  • They are much smaller and cheaper than third-generation computers.
  • They are Portable and reliable.
  • Fourth-generation computers using PCs.
  • They are using Pipeline processing.
  • In this no AC required.
  • In this generation Concept of the internet was introduced.
  • This type of computer easily available.

Fifth Generation(1989-present)

  • They are using artificial intelligence still in development.
  • Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science.
  • They have used ULSI technology.
  •  They consume less power than earlier computers.
  • They are much reliable.
  • They are providing friendly interfaces with multimedia features.
